Running into her head-over-heels first love during a week’s holiday in Mallorca with her spirited friend Lou was not what Samantha Hillcrest had planned. When sparks fly on the idyllic Mediterranean island she wonders how she’ll be able to return home to her husband and grown-up children, pretending her life hasn’t been turned upside down. Caught between family commitments and the red-hot, sizzling chemistry she shares with Gabriel—her love from twenty-five years ago—Samantha faces an impossibly heart-breaking choice.

Excerpt 1

‘You okay?’ Lou snapped her fingers in front of my face.
Startled, I sat up sharply, almost knocking the cold beer she offered out of her hand.
‘Beer? At this time?’
‘It’s refreshing and we’re on holiday, Sam.’ She resumed her position on the sun lounger. ‘Where were you just then? You were miles away.’
‘Oh, you know, being here is bringing back all kinds of memories.’
‘You’ve never really told me about your work here.’
‘All over with by the time I met you, wasn’t it?’
Lou and I had first met at a local Guildford playgroup when the kids were preschoolers. We were as bored as each other with the inane drudgery of being at home alone with children. I adored my girls—I wouldn’t change a thing about them or about staying home with them—but it certainly wasn’t the most intellectually stimulating choice to make, and, of course, it meant sacrificing my career. In the nineties, a man like Andy wouldn’t have dreamt of giving up his important city job—I didn’t even know exactly what he did. Was it terrible of me not to care?
‘How long were you and Andy together before you had Tess?’ Lou asked.
‘About a year,’ I told her, without actually saying Tess was an accident. She could work it out. You didn’t usually meet someone at twenty-one and fall pregnant within three months on purpose—unless you were from Grimsby. She did the maths quickly and cut her eyes to me.
‘All worked out okay, though, hasn’t it?’ she said with a bright smile. Lou didn’t do misery and heartbreak. She certainly wasn’t the kind of friend I’d go to if I needed a shoulder to cry on.
‘Terrific,’ I said numbly, swigging my beer.
‘Thought we might head into Palma tonight. Try the more sophisticated bars where the locals hang out rather than risk more of the sleaze from last night. What do you think?’
My stomach lurched at the thought and I spluttered on my beer. The last time I’d been to Palma was with him.
‘Jesus, steady, Sam. We don’t have to. Just a thought.’ She wiped a splattering of beer from her arm.
‘I’d love to. Let’s do that.’ It’s not as if I’d run into him, is it? Probably doesn’t even live round here anymore.
‘Righto, I’ll order a taxi for about nine, shall I?’
That’s about my normal bedtime, I thought dimly. I gave her a cold hard stare. ‘Lou, for God’s sake. We’re not eighteen. Can’t we make it seven?’
She rolled her eyes. ‘All right, Cinders. Back before midnight, too, I guess?’
‘Not if I meet my Prince Charming,’ I retorted.
She let out a hearty laugh.
I wasn’t joking.
